Can I use my existing approved Vietnam e-visa if I have a new passport?
Question:
I am a United States citizen and recently received a new United States passport. I already have a valid Vietnam multiple-entry e-visa, but it was issued using my old passport number. My flight to Vietnam is scheduled for March 8, 2026. Can I still use the approved Vietnam e-visa to enter Vietnam?
Answer:
No, you can’t. A Vietnam e-visa is only valid when the passport details on the visa match the passport you present when travelling. If your e-visa was issued with your old passport details, it generally cannot be used with your new passport.
If the passport number in your approved e-visa does not match your new passport, the airlines will refuse boarding, and the Vietnam immigration officers at the arrival airport will deny your entry.
If you received a new passport after your e-visa was issued, consider the following options:
1. Apply for a new Vietnam e-visa
If you still have sufficient time before departure, submit a new e-visa application using the details from your new passport.
2. Request an emergency Vietnam e-visa
If your departure date is approaching, you may apply for an expedited or emergency e-visa using your new passport information.
3. Use a visa correction service
If you are travelling very soon, you may request a last-minute visa correction service to update your new passport number on the official Vietnam immigration system.
To avoid travel disruptions, ensure that the passport number on your visa exactly matches the passport you will use for your trip.
Tips: Please keep your both old and new passport together when you are travelling to Vietnam. The previous entry and exit stamps or visa sticker in the old passport may be useful in emergency cases.
