Do children under 14 years old need a visa for Vietnam?
According to the Vietnam Immigration Department regulations, all children who hold their own passports are required to obtain a visa to enter Vietnam, except those who are citizens of Vietnam visa exempt countries.
However, infants (around 1-2 years old) whose personal details are included in their parents’ passports do not need a separate visa. Children aged 2 to 14 years who have their own passports must apply for an individual e-visa to enter Vietnam (for tourism or visiting relatives purposes).
When completing the Vietnam e-visa application form, parents will see Item 7: “Accompanying child(ren) under 14 years old who are issued with the same passport request to be issued the same e-visa (if any).”
This section often confuses, as some parents mistakenly believe that it applies to all children under 14 years old, even if the child has a separate passport. This is incorrect and can result in the child being denied boarding, delaying or cancelling the entire family’s trip.
Before applying for a Vietnam visa, please ensure that each child under 14 years old with their own passport has a separate e-visa application. If a parent includes a child’s name in their own visa application, the issued visa will apply only to the parent, while the child will still need a separate visa to enter Vietnam.
Vietnam visa requirements for children under 14 years old
When applying for a Vietnam visa for children, please make sure to prepare the following:
- Valid passport
The child’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Vietnam. A scanned copy of the passport’s bio page must be clear, showing all 4 corners without glare, shadows, or blur. - Recent portrait photo
The parents must provide a recently taken portrait photo of the child. The photo should clearly show the child’s full face with eyes open and no hat, glasses, or bare shoulders. - A valid credit card
The parents can pay the visa fee for children using their credit cards. They can also make a payment via PayPal or Wise for the emergency visa service via speed up Vietnam visa
Note:
– The portrait photo (can be taken with a mobile phone) may differ from the image in the passport if the passport was issued long ago; that’s no problem;
– You must not crop the passport photo to use as the portrait photo for the visa application – a separate, original image is required;
– The visa fee for children under 14 years old is the same as that for an adult, for both the application fee and the speed up service fee.
– You should also bring your child’s birth certificate in case it is requested as an additional supporting document during the visa or immigration process.
